Medication Management

Expert psychiatric evaluation and medication management for children and teens — in person or via telehealth

Medication is never the first answer — but for many children, it is an important part of one. When behavioral and emotional symptoms are severe enough to limit a child's ability to learn, function, or engage in therapy, the right medication — prescribed carefully, monitored closely, and adjusted as needed — can make everything else work better.

At Help For Your Child, medication management is provided by Dr. Robert Lowenstein, M.D. — a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist with 46 years of clinical practice and a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Lowenstein brings unparalleled expertise in the medical complexities of childhood behavioral and emotional conditions, and he works in close coordination with HFYC's psychological and therapeutic team to ensure every medication decision is part of a coherent, comprehensive treatment plan.

How Medication Management Works at HFYC

No child at HFYC receives a prescription without a thorough evaluation first. Dr. Lowenstein's approach is systematic, family-centered, and grounded in the principle that medication should always serve the child's overall treatment goals — not substitute for them.

1

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation

Before any medication is considered, Dr. Lowenstein conducts a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This includes a detailed clinical interview with the child and family, review of prior evaluations and treatment history, assessment of current symptom severity and functional impairment, medical history review, and — when relevant — coordination with Dr. Carosso's psychological findings. The goal is a complete clinical picture before any prescription decision is made.

2

Diagnosis & Treatment Planning

Based on the evaluation, Dr. Lowenstein establishes or confirms the psychiatric diagnosis and develops a treatment plan that addresses the full clinical picture. When medication is clinically indicated, he explains the rationale, the options, the expected benefits, and the potential side effects — in plain language. Families are active participants in this decision. No medication is prescribed without informed family consent and understanding.

3

Medication Initiation

When medication is initiated, Dr. Lowenstein follows a careful, conservative approach — typically starting at the lowest effective dose and titrating gradually. For complex presentations or co-occurring conditions, the sequencing of medications is planned deliberately to allow clear assessment of each medication's contribution. The goal is always the most effective medication at the lowest possible dose.

4

Ongoing Monitoring & Adjustment

Medication management is not a one-time event. Dr. Lowenstein conducts regular follow-up appointments to assess the child's response to medication, monitor for side effects, evaluate functional progress, and adjust the regimen as the child grows and develops. Parents are encouraged to report changes between appointments. Telehealth appointments are available for follow-up visits, making ongoing monitoring more convenient for families.

5

Coordination with the Clinical Team

Because Dr. Lowenstein practices within HFYC alongside Dr. Carosso and the therapy team, medication decisions are made with full awareness of the child's psychological profile and therapeutic progress. When a child is in therapy, the prescriber and the therapist are in communication — not working in separate silos. This coordination consistently produces better outcomes than fragmented care across multiple unconnected providers.

Conditions Treated with Medication Management

Dr. Lowenstein evaluates and treats a wide range of childhood and teen psychiatric conditions. Medication is not appropriate for every condition or every child — but where it is indicated, it is managed with precision and care. Conditions commonly treated include:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety disorders — generalized anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, panic disorder
  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Bipolar disorder and mood dysregulation
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) — when co-occurring ADHD, anxiety, or depression is present
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder — medication for co-occurring behavioral and emotional symptoms
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Sleep disorders with psychiatric etiology
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Other behavioral and emotional conditions requiring psychiatric medication

Telehealth Medication Management

Follow-up medication management appointments with Dr. Lowenstein are available via telehealth — allowing families to attend visits from home without the need to travel to a clinic location for every appointment.

Telehealth is particularly well-suited for routine medication monitoring visits once an initial in-person evaluation has been completed. Families in rural areas of Southwestern Pennsylvania, or those with scheduling constraints, find telehealth follow-up appointments a significant practical advantage.

  • Available for established patients following in-person evaluation
  • Secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform
  • Accepted by most major insurance carriers for covered services
  • Available across all of HFYC's service areas in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Note: Initial psychiatric evaluations are conducted in person. Telehealth is available for follow-up medication management visits.
